One night @ 15 Pages
One night at 15 pages
(A critical remark on Mr. Chetan’s popularity)
(Ankita Gupta)
I was on the top of the world when one of my room mates gave me “One Night @ The Call Center” to read on the second night of my Kolkata – Examination – Tour. Yes ‘The examination tour’ as I was in SRFTI (Satya Jit Ray Film and Television Institute) for examination in direction course. We had given the paper on 14 august and it was the holiday the day after. In our country 15 August is a National holiday as our country got freedom on the same day, if u remember. So we have nothing to do while the exam was over, at least for a day. And I was bit relaxed compared to the last day. So I asked something new and interesting as a time pass to Suchita. And she gave me that shampoo sachet……..oops!!! ‘I mean one night @ the call center’ …….sorry tongue’s mistake not mines. After 30 minutes I jumped on my bedding, I splashed in pond of alacrity, I splashed in the pond of enthusiasm, I splashed in the pond of achievement, I was thoroughly splashed -splashed –splashed….the feeling was like, I had splashed in a chill soothing water which anybody desires in hot panicking summers. I took the shape like a frog who is gazing an insect standing straight near his nose. The shampoo sachet…oops!!........the book took place exactly the same like that insect near my nose in that froglike position. Suchita asked “what happened???” I said “just a damn good book”.
I could see on her face that she was really enjoying my reaction as she felt, I suppose, that she had given me the best piece of literature. But believe me, reality was like the rough brown side of the picture….how could I say her that I had never read any English literature book so fluently without watching DICTIONARY a single time in nick of the time. How could I say her that I was a throughout Hindi-medium girl from a government school. How could I say her all those poor-fellow like things in that Global Village where everybody was talking in English, walking in English and shocking in English. No… I could not be the victim of ‘Don’t know- English- classes. So I kept the other side of the picture in obscurity.
Where I was?? Yah… @ 15 pages…so I had mugged up 15 pages in only 20 minutes, tremendous, achievement, a feather in my cap. You won’t believe I was trying to mugging up the original text of ‘King Lear’ a year back and I could hardly read 2 or 3 pages in 1 or 2 hours as in every line I got a new vocabulary unknown to me. May be it will not be as difficult to those from the convent schools. But it was rather difficult for me if I say precisely. So I read 15 pages without any break in the nick of the time, I was ecstatically overwhelmed and privileged that “I” too could read an English novel. We all were totally dead beaten after the tiresome day. We felt drowsing unwontedly.
………………so I could not read more than that of 15 pages that night and so on nights as institute management already made a tight schedule for us for those comomg 10 days..
On 21st of august I was wandering in Park Street. As I was proceeding I could see most of the book sellers had the plethora of the copies of Bhagat’s all the three books, ‘5 point someone’, ‘one night @ the call center’, ‘3 mistakes of my life’ the were kept in preference. The booksellers also had the posters of “3 mistakes of my life” the latest one I supposed. On the whole they were publicized, they were advertised and also they were fantasized.
After convinced by the fact that the book is really a blockbuster, a super duper hit masala commercial piece of literature, I snatched it from one of the recognized shop located at School street, if really there is such a place in Kolakata, because perhaps I forgot the exact name of the place while there are so many streets in Kolkata. Excuse me; it is not that important that from where I purchased it but the water -to -live like important thing is that ‘I purchased it., because I had the power of purchasing it. And I had the power of purchasing it though the price of the book fell under the limit of my purchasing power. It is only of Rs.-95 but I got in only in Rs.85 after 10% discount. I can make my point ‘I had the power of purchasing it ’more valid in the light of the fact that I sickly wanted to purchase ‘The White Tiger’ one of Mr. Adiga’s but could not because of the price tag the book having Rs.395. My sickness downloaded it after few months, so I ……………….with the downloaded copy. Look you will have to think twice or thrice before spending Rs.-400 at once on some literature thing when u belongs to a lower middle class family. And in my case I thought 1000 of time and still thinking and have a believe that one I will get the original copy, which I sickly want to have. Don’t be confuse, as I am not comparing Mr. X to Mr. Y, I am just pointing the conditions which can affect your interest to purchase a commodity. Sorry I am taking books as the commodity though I am a student of economics and see every thing which can be bought or purchase as a commodity.
Let’s back to the topic guys, come on to the Chetan’s books. It was Kolkata where I first met Chetan, of course within the boundary of his book. Curiosity sucks. I came back to Lucknow. Started searching his popularity in here. Attended book fests. He was all the where. God is always with me… I would not had to toiled a lot as automatically I got chances to meet people who themselves started talking about Bhagat ‘s novels whenever the literature talks went on. I will let u know about only three of them because they are the representative of three different major groups of Y2K young generation. One is an intermediate boy, one is girl in graduation doing her BBA, and the last one is a girl working in ETV Hydrabaad as a fresher. The last two asked without blinking an eyelid “didi have u read Chetan Bhagat’s any” when we were negotiating about the latest literature we gulped up ( both the girls negotiated in different epochs). And that Intermediate boy startled me when I was playing a quiz with him which was based on general knowledge havivg some of the questions like ‘ name the auther of the book the namesake and FarishtoN ki Mithai’ etc. he replied “I don’t know writers and books and all except my own subjects of science” he blinked once and thought for a while and said
“but I know one and that is……..and that is Chetan Bhagat”. Oh my God…….I was stunned at once after listening the name. he was there too amongst the intermediate students. Awesome!! Chetan heads off to you, you are equally popular amongst all Y2K young generation who is going to be the future’s permanent consumer of your product.
I must say Bhagat is the trendiest fashion statement amongst the pool of the people sick for having anything on the name of the English literature.
On the whole I want to say thanks to Mr. Chetan for giving me the privilege of reading three thik thak thick English novels. And that privilege flight me up to the rather intellectual class of people from my class that was ‘pseudo intellectual’ .
I totally agree with the fact that he is the most popular writer in India in the latest epoch. And I am not saying it on the mere ground of article published in newspapers and magazines or even by influencing by the taglines in his books state him as ‘the best seller of India’ , but I made my own ground for depicting the truth, as I told you before that I researched on it amongst the people of my age group. While doing my job of researching I got the reason behind it .
Take an example of shampoo sachet . it is popular because of three reasons. First it is effectively and widely advertised, secondly it is cheap in cost and lastly easy to use.
[some part missing]
Accept my grand salute on this chmmashavari strategy. You caught the pulse of the major group of students who either from Hindi medium schools or belong to north Indian states whose fluency in English is as poor as a boor tries to cope up in the elite society.
But at the same time this group of people endeavors enthusiastically to nourish themselves equally to the elite group of people, and wants to talk in English, walk in English and also quarrel in English.
